Have you ever asked yourself “What will I do after graduation”? I certainly did! Graduation day is not only the day when you receive your degree, it’s also the time you close one chapter of your life and open a new one. I realized this at the beginning of my last year of college. My final year leading up to graduation was rather stressful for me so instead of enjoying my last year of studying, questions kept coming up. There was no one who would help me and give me the answers I was looking for. Eventually, instead of torturing myself, I decided to take some steps in order that I could enjoy at least a bit of my final year. I suggest you do the same.
Six Steps to a Successful Future After Graduation
1 – Put down on paper all the questions you have about your future
Trust me when I say that this is maybe the most important thing to do. You will see why shortly…
2 – Read all the questions you have written
One of the reasons for this is that, believe it or not, you will get most of the answers yourself while you are reading your questions. In this way you will be able to release at least some of the pressure. Make sure you write your answers down!
3 – Make a plan
After you have answered your questions, you will be able to start making a plan. My suggestion is that you create a one year plan starting from graduation day. It is important that when you create your one year plan, you are completely honest to yourself, and have realistic expectations. Think about, for example
- what you can or cannot do with your college degree
- the level of knowledge you got at college and whether you need more training
- is there a way you could get more training on the job if you need it
- realistic salary expectations
- moving location to get the right job for you
- Oh, and do not forget that your plan should include your student loan and how you will pay it off!
4 – How about a Plan B?
Now all the above might seem overwhelming, so it would be a good idea to look at other ways of earning money – can you set up a business which will help with expenses and be your Plan B? Everyone should have a Plan B, right?
We have lots of ideas about setting up and building businesses, and about opportunities you might not be aware of, so send us a message here if you’d like to brainstorm with us. There’s no fee for that, just in case you were wondering. Just reach out to us for a free consultation and you never know what magic might happen.
5 – Present your plan to your family
I am sure that your family have already made plans for your future, whether you know it or not. They probably started doing that the day you were born! So no matter how similar or not those plans might be to yours, your family will want to hear what you have in mind so that they can help and support you.
6 – Take Action
As much as the future might seem overwhelming to you now, it won’t be once you have a plan of action in place. You might be thinking step one is to relax and enjoy summer, but don’t let the grass grow under your feet. Do something every day to move your plan forward, and that will keep you confident of your future and leaps and bounds ahead of your peers who chose to loaf the next few months away.
Whatever ideas you have, without your taking any action, they will remain just ideas. The world is an open book to you now and you can write any story you like in it. Life is full of opportunities for you to take, and if you don’t take them, you can bet your bottom dollar someone else will.
Explore any and all opportunities you find and maximize your potential.
And as I said before, reach out to us if you want to brainstorm ideas, if you need support, or if you want to explore your Plan B possibilities. We are always looking to expand our team and help our clients and customers expand theirs too, so you never know who we might be able to connect you with.
Whatever you choose to do, if you are a graduate we wish you all the very best with your future, and we hope you make all your dreams come true.
